Noruz
ARTafterDARK is the Honolulu Academy of Arts' monthly art party organized by a dynamic group of young volunteers dedicated to exploring the arts.
WHEN: March 26, 2010 6 - 9 PM
WHERE: Honolulu Academy of Arts
Come spend Noruz—Persian New Year—with the Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute and ARTafterDARK! Experience new sounds, new tastes and new sights!
ON VIEW IN CENTRAL COURTYARD:
Immerse yourself in Persian culture by experiencing Hafsin—the symbolic centerpiece of Noruz that Iranians set up in their homes. Families gather around a beautiful embroidered fabric laden with items that signify renewal, life, happiness, spiritual purity, prosperity, fertility, growth, good health—all things one desires for the New Year. You'll see things such as serkeh (vinegar), somagh (crushed sumac) and sham' (candelabra).
Also enjoy a free taste of rose water when you arrive in the courtyard (while supplies last)!
RELAX IN THE BANYAN COURTYARD:
Rest your feet, have something to drink and vibe to the music of distinguished Iranian composer and violinist Parviz Yahagi (pre-recorded) amidst spring flower arrangements by Bill Maliglig.
Bar by Downtown.
PERSIAN PLAY IN THE EDUCATION LECTURE HALL:
Downstairs from the Banyan Courtyard, Maseeh Ganjali and five of his fellow UH classmates will perform the play "Puppets" inspired by Noruz and their Persian culture.
Puppets
In this play, the puppeteer has a new story for you. It's the story of a hero who is in love with a girl. But there is a monster who lives close to their home. In order for hero and girl to live happily ever after, the hero must defeat the monster. And this story has one more character, Haji Firouz. He will perform his jokes and make you laugh. Come and listen to the puppeteer as he unfolds the story. Come and listen to how it all begins and how it all ends.
The 30-minute interactive, hysterical play is on for one night only!
Two performances:
First run: 7pm
Second run: 8pm
Make sure to arrive early as seating is limited!
