The 6th Annual Starlight Ball

When Cool was King

WHEN: January 10, 2009 7 - 11 PM
WHERE: Honolulu Academy of Arts

January 10, 2009
7–11pm at the Honolulu Academy of Arts
Created and supported by ARTafterDARK, a dynamic group of young volunteers dedicated to exploring the arts.

After a two-month hiatus, ARTafterDARK, the Honolulu Academy of Arts' monthly last-Friday melding of art and evening capers, kicks off its sixth year with the Starlight Ball on Jan. 10.

This year the gala event, sponsored by Prada, returns as When Cool Was King, channeling the Rat Pack (premium tables are called Frankies and Sammys), skinny Elvis and Angie Dickinson on the cover of Esquire magazine.

TABLES + TICKETS

In The Board Room: FRANKIE TABLES - $3,500 (table of 10)
The museum's Central Court will become The Board Room. Surrounded by gossamer white curtains, it's a VIP supper club with an haute three-course dinner by Chef Mavro, an exclusive show, and live auction.
Chef Mavro's special seasonal menu:
• "My Way" Hebi Carpaccio—beautifully briny thin slices of Big Island abalone, with salted cod croquette, and accented with red chimichurri and essence of cilantro
• "Come Fly with Me" Crispy Roasted Duck—with Asian faro, baby bok choi and citrus glaze
• "Best is Yet to Come" Lilikoi Malasadas—his addictive signature dessert—dreamy puff balls in a glistening pool of guava coulis with pineapple-coconut ice cream

Board Room entertainment:
Only Frankie Table guests will get to see this amazing lineup:
Things start with a bang with a Viva Las Vegas revue by Derek Daniels Productions
Then groove to the all-star jazz combo of Steve Jones (bass), Deshannon Higa (sax), Darryl Pelligrini (drums), Daniel Del Negro (piano), who will be joined by a slew of sultry vocalists—Cathy Foy, Alison Maldonado, Elika Santos, Yvonne Iverson, Don Nahaku
And finally hepcats Sammy Davis. Jr (aka Gary Moore) and Elvis (aka Jonathan Von Brana) will wow you old-school Vegas style.

Silent Auction:
Silent Auction Chair Alyssa Fung and the silent auction committee have assembled a terrific silent auction with donations from Hawaii's most generous companies and individuals. Click here to view a listing of silent auction donors for Starlight Ball 2009.

.................................................

In the Hep Cat Lounge, the Stardust Room and Lush Lounge:
SAMMY TABLES - $500 (table of 4)
- SOLD OUT
Kinau Court is the swinging Hep Cat Lounge and the blue-tiled Mediterranean Court becomes the Stardust Room, and Luce Pavilion is the Lush Lounge. All three will be the scene of Sammy Tables, which provide attendees with a landing pad between the Vegas-style buffet, lounge show, nightclub and silent auction.

Each area has its own flavor and entertainment. Take your pick from these lineups:

HEP CAT LOUNGE: Genai Curti on the mic and Pierre Grill on the piano
LUSH LOUNGE: Nocturnal Sound Krew

Also, throughout the Academy will be appearances by contestants from the Universal Show Queen Pageant.

*All galleries will be closed during the Starlight Ball

Attire:
Elegant themed attire encouraged and black-tie optional for gentlemen, so get out your best Mad Men suits and frocks—it'll be a stylish ride.

The Cause:
Proceeds from the Starlight Ball benefit the Academy's Art To Go outreach program that serves youth at risk in Hawaii.

Art To Go is an afterschool community arts program. The program encourages young people’s creativity and provides them with opportunities to build self-esteem, express themselves, and encourage alternative leisure patterns. Academy Art to Go instructors, along with Big Brother, Big Sister volunteers, go to schools such as Palolo Elementary and Nanakuli High School where they work hands on with students on art projects.

To date, Art To Go has served 3,500 island children, with another 650  participating this year. Recent expansions have brought the program to public schools on the neighbor islands.
